Engaging Communications for Academics (July 2016)

Claire Bolderson - Leading a Training Session

Communications Training

Claire provides training for individuals or groups wanting to improve their communication skills. Sessions are sometimes conducted with former BBC Senior Producer Caroline Finnigan and are always tailor-made for clients. They can include any of the following:

  • What journalists want from you – and what you can get from them
  • Pitching your expertise to the media
  • Performing with ease and confidence in interviews
  • Using social media
  • Speaking in public – how to relax, perform and engage with an audience.

Sessions feature practical examples and exercises including on-camera interviews with participants. Claire uses her extensive experience as a presenter to make these challenging and realistic.

Clients include Oxford academics, authors’ groups, the German government’s international aid staff, the BBC’s Women in News initiative, and several charities.

“It was a great experience…The interviewer had done her research and asked me several excellent questions. This made it quite different from, say, practicing on camera with a friend.” – Social Sciences researcher, University of Oxford.

Great day with and learning the tricks of the media trade. Much respect for their journalistic talent  – Humanities researcher, University of Oxford

“Claire taught us how to find what’s unique and valuable in our work and express it in an engaging interview.” – Author Candy Gourlay, Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

“Claire is an experienced and adept trainer capable of handling a significant numbers of users with diverse skills and competencies. She employs a range of media, her own considerable experience, and a clear communication style that is both motivational and effective”. – Adam Leach, CEO Y-Care International (charity).
